Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Pre-K teacher, who teaches four-year-olds at a low-income/high poverty urban school district. I work with students who are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. They struggle daily in writing, reading, and math. They come to school hungry, unclean, tired, and desperate for attention. They just want to be loved. My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous. They like to move, and they love to read. They want love and lots of positive attention. They are always smiling and full of spirit at school.
Many of my students are being raised in single-parent households and all receive free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
Our school provides a backpack program to feed many of these students over the weekend. I may not be able to control their home lives, but I can certainly control their experiences during the school day. It is my goal to provide them with the best education possible.
My Project
I just moved to a new school, and my classroom could really use a makeover in our dramatic play area. My students love to play house, and it’s quite entertaining to listen to the conversations they have with one another. This is one of the best ways to help improve vocabulary which is very important because most of my students speak Spanish.
The play food and dishes will really help my students explore and use their imagination.
We will also use the different foods as we learn about the importance of nutrition.
