Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everybody has special needs. Some people need glasses, some need wheelchairs, and some need to work towards a reinforcer. My preschoolers with moderate-severe autism are no different. They have special learning needs as well
My students are located on a beautiful campus with over 20 special education classrooms catering to the needs of children in early intervention classrooms.
My students have Moderate-Severe Autism and Speech and Language Delays. They are amazing. Every day they come to school to learn and have fun. They are bright, charismatic, and most of all, loving. They are not afraid to be themselves. Many of my students are new to me and have just recently been diagnosed. It is my job to make sure they get a good start to their education. We work on academic skills, social skills, and behavior.
My Project
The resources, such as the room dividers, are a big commodity in this kind of work. I have had some in the past, but unfortunately they have been broken and our district is unable to fund new ones for the rest of the year. The dividers block off areas and create important areas in the classroom such as individual work groups and work centers. The dividers are movable so we are also able to use them as privacy dividers during a behavior in order to keep the classroom running. Along with the dividers are some sensory materials. Thera Putty will be beneficial to my students who have some OT goals or need general strengthening to kickstart fine motor skills. The sensory bones activity and butterfly activity will be beneficial to growing skills as well. Not only will the students have activities that promote fine motor, but the manipulatives can promote spatial concepts, prepositions, and language as well all at a level that is engaging and age appropriate.
This project will make a big different for my classroom and students.
My students are the most important part of my job, and their needs come first. Being a teacher is a tough job. The hours are long, sometimes the resources are limited, and we must try to fend for ourselves. My student's needs come first, and I need to find resources that will make that happen. These resources are important to myself and my students.
