This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our state ranks among one of the lowest states in the country for gender equality in high school sports offered to girls. While flag football has been around for many years, never had there been a league designated for the sport. That changed in 2019 when two of our high schools faced off in the first ever official girls flag football game. We now live in one of only six states that have sanctioned girls' high school football!
Our Girls' Flag Football Team is extraordinary and strong.
While we're enthusiastic and committed, the Team is from a school that is highly economically disadvantaged. But despite facing enormous obstacles, they come to school eager to work hard and they strive to be role models among their peers. They are a bonded supportive team and deserve to have equipment that will keep them safe and make them successful.
My Project
Our team is so happy to finally have a chance to play football and show that girls can do it, too! This project is to help fund training equipment for the girls' flag football team. As this is still a pretty new sport here, we are lacking the appropriate equipment for training. Because this is the south, the athletes sweat hard in our heat! The girls need absorbent headbands to keep the sweat out of their eyes and off their faces so they can keep playing the game without interruption. Each player also needs their own mouthguard for safety.
For the team to be great and train safely, we need your support to purchase a headband and mouthguard for each player and rehydration supplies.
Girls' flag football is essential to the growth of the game and demonstrates that football is for all, and the greater the participation, the stronger the game, and the more young women can build the transferrable skills that team sports provide for achieving success in life.
