My class is full of enthusiastic 2nd graders who have a love for learning. My class has many bright students who have a thirst for knowledge. My goal is to keep that thirst going all the time.
This generation of learners needs to have hands on activities that keep them engaged.
There is nothing more engaging than real world science. For them to carefully observe a life cycle is amazing to them, and these are experiences they do not forget. These are the kind of experiences they will continue to make connections with as they advance in their journey in science.
Having the hands on experience of watching the praying mantis life cycle will create a long lasting memory for the students. They will be able to make text to world connections between what they are reading about and what they are observing at the same time. By doing this, they will have a better understanding of what the life cycle means. We will compare and contrast other life cycles they learn about in this unit. The students will also be able to fully understand the basic needs of this insect and connect it with the needs of other plants and animals.
