Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a second home to my students. In fact, for some of my students, it's their only structured and safe home. Over 90% of my students are high poverty, and some of the students have special needs. The majority of my students are Hispanic children whose parents speak little English.
What motivates me to come to work each day is my students, and that's why I love my job!
They are the future, and I need to make sure they are prepared for what society has in store for them. I believe in each one of my students, and I make sure they know it!
The first thing my students do is eat their breakfast in the classroom while watching current events on the computer. They are so intrigued with what's going on around in the world. They love to ask questions, and we have great discussions! After breakfast, we move into our literacy/math/science/social studies block stations. This school year, another teacher and I are developing a multi-grade fully integrated STEM program along with incorporating mindfulness activities to help our students focus, relax, and learn.
My Project
My students are dealing with a myriad of problems at home and at school. They need to learn how to deal with these problems with strategies I can teach in the classroom. With the resources and material of mindfulness activities, fidget materials, and activity cards focusing on emotions will help my students have the tools to deal with whatever obstacles they may need to deal with.
As their teacher, I want to have the resources to help my students self-regulate their emotions in an effective way.
Each morning we will do our restorative circle and use the guided questions from the different activity cards I requested. We will also end our day in our circle and discuss how our day was and what we want to work on. During the day we will use mindfulness strategies with the chimes and activities from the resources I requested. Each student will receive a stress ball to use throughout the day as needed. The other material will be utilized (rubric cubes and puzzles) to give students an opportunity to have other fidget material to use as needed to help them stay focused. Having these resources available for my students will give them an opportunity to deal with their emotions and become successful learners.
