Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Music to a diverse group of music students at a public Title I visual and performing arts high school in downtown Los Angeles. Students come from all over the city to receive a top-notch education in both academics and their chosen art form (music, dance, visual or theater). Many of them go on to study at some of the top academic colleges and art schools across the country.
Our diverse student body is made up of mostly Latino students and also has significant numbers of African American, Asian, Filipino, and Caucasian students.
Using the visual and performing arts as a focus and motivational tool for student academic achievement, our school program offers an interdisciplinary approach to academics to provide students with a college preparatory curriculum and learning goals that are focused on enabling students to meet the needs of a globalized society by developing critical thinkers, responsible and socially aware citizens, and effective communicators.
Our school is a unique and innovative comprehensive high school not only because of its ability to attract outstanding young artists, but also serving the heart of Los Angeles; a community with very high poverty and crime rates.
My Project
Due to distance learning, my students are practicing and submitting assignments from home. Unfortunately, my brass players (Trumpets, French Horns, and Trombones) are having issues with the natural noise level of the instruments. My students are having issues with noise complaints from neighbors and landlords.
A practice mute is a simple solution that keeps my students engaged in the curriculum, while maintaining the noise level down at home during distance learning.
My students, their family and the members of their community will be very excited to have the proper equipment, making their homes a much better learning environment.
