I teach in a one-of-a-kind public charter school for dyslexic students. We are 1st-5th grade this year as we open for the first time. My students are super special with unique ways of viewing the world around them and in the ways they learn. Being dyslexic or having the tendencies of dyslexia often makes reading difficult, and taking notes is hard too! Making everything more visual is so crucial for dyslexic students! The more we use our hands, the more our learning moves from short-term to long-term knowledge, and muscle memory increases too.
My Project
Our students practice writing everything! We write a lot to move our learning from the paper to our long-term memory. We write to practice letter formation and spelling, we draw to explain our thinking and ideas, and to come up with our solutions in math. Our teachers draw and write large versions of our letters and words and create charts for our students to refer back to as they work. When teachers can make all this practice fun with bright colors, smelly markers, and cute pencils it makes the learning a little more fun for both the students AND the teachers.
