I am the Reading Interventionist for first graders in an urban, Title I school. My school's population is more than 90% poverty and minority. My students are considered to be "at risk".
All of my students are struggling with learning to read. They come from homes where the parents have limited reading skills and many of them did not complete high school. As our population changes, I am seeing more and more children who do not even speak English. A major key to learning to read is knowing the alphabet and how it relates to building words. We are seeing major budget cuts and paper for extra practice and skill building will not be provided for the remainder of this year and next. My student's families can't afford to purchase paper and other essential supplies for their child's education. The children need to be able to practice word-building skills in order to master these tasks. We need to help these children get the best possible education despite budget cuts. This is where you can help us. My students need a Magnetic Language Center and a Magnetic Write and Wipe Board to practice and master word-building skills.
I have found a wonderful tool that will provide practice in all essential areas of letter and word work. It is magnetic, so we can use it over and over again. I will be able to use it all day long with my classes this year and years to come. It covers Phonemic Awareness, Vocabulary Skills, Sequence, Syllables, Alphabet Study, Rhyming, Classifying, Sorting, and Opposites. It eliminates the need for practice worksheets and is better for the children because it is a hands-on tool.
The teacher can use it for small group work or direct instruction. The magnetic white board is large enough for the whole group to see and can take the place of chart paper, which is also being cut. It is large enough for all the necessary magnetic pieces to stick to it at one time. It is very colorful and will keep the students' attention and interest. This is just what my students need to get a good start at becoming better readers.
Your help will ensure that the best education for my students can continue to be provided despite impossible cuts. They will be able to enjoy the love of reading in their lives. What could be better than that?
Helping children learn to read is a truly wonderful gift.
