This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach sixth grade at a Title I public elementary school in Orange County. A majority of our students are English Language Learners. Our school teaches students from pre-K to sixth grade. Many students are well below grade level in academics, but have a desire to learn and improve.

Poverty is an issue that many of my students face.

Over ninety percent of the students at my school receive free lunch and many are homeless.

While my students' parents have the desire to contribute to my class and want what's best for their child, they are financially unable to help me.

My Project

One of the best ways to practice skills in Language Arts is by having them read a novel. Novels provide a richer text for students to dive into than the short stories provided in their textbooks.

We will practice identifying character traits, understanding how plot develops, determining theme and many other skills as we read this novel in class together.

This book has been taught to our 6th grade students every year for the past 5 years, but the books I inherited from a former teacher are beat up and missing pages. We also integrate social studies content while reading this novel as we study ancient Greece.
