Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you dread being called to the board to work out math problems or did you hate waiting for your turn?
I teach an amazing group of 27 curious bilingual 5th grade students in Texas.
My students are in the midst of a very challenging school year. They are now in their final year at an elementary school where more than 90% of students receive free or reduced lunch, which also means that my bilingual students are in the last year of their transitional bilingual program. Thus, this is the first year they are receiving classroom instruction entirely in English. It is challenging enough for my students to make the annual progress required to pass their high stakes exams in the spring and move onto middle school, without also having to achieve a level of English that is sufficient to pass the high stakes test for the first time in English!
My Project
Whether you dreaded being called to the board or couldn’t wait for your turn, these classroom supplies provide a solution. The lapboards, markers and erasers will allow the students to work out problems on a small white-board at their own desk. There is less pressure when the whole class isn’t observing but the main benefit is that every student has a chance to participate at the same time. The white-boards are advantageous in that they preserve paper, allow the teacher to see the work clearly from a distance, and they are fun! Simply adding a new twist to paper and pencil work makes practicing math skills much more fun not to mention their usefulness in setting up classroom games. The double-sided boards allow extra space for doing work on the back of the board and can be turned sideways for help separating out the place-values of a number. The boards are also handy for handwriting practice. A class set permits students to store them inside their desk for quick access.
You can’t perfect any skill without practice, but the practice need not be boring and repetitive.
Help my students find the joy in practice by supplying us with lap-boards, markers and erasers.
