Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are fifth graders from an inner city neighborhood. Their lives are often unpredictable until they step over my threshold. They are very resilient from the outside stressors they experience and when they come to school they are prepared to get their math on. We approach each day as a team.
“As a parent, I have a job as a role model to my children, and by extension, to other young people.” – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar These are words that I live by to help inspire these young minds to put their best foot forward and to work together to get the math job done.
My Project
These materials are needed to make it possible to do our mathematical jobs. As a fifth grade teacher to 100 students in a low socioeconomic school, it is crucial to be frugal. Therefore we try to use dry erase boards rather than paper. This also helps with the conservation of paper waste. The problem that we have had is that my students cannot afford dry erase markers. We also need pencils and a sharpener for test taking. We have amazing systems and routines down for math drills and math practice of application problems. We are just lacking the basic tools. A solid education is what I feel I owe my students. We need adequate tools to get the learning done.
