My students are a merry mix of all demographics. We welcome diversity in our classroom and celebrate all of the ensuing connections we discover. These audacious students yearn for challenges that extend beyond the classroom. They reach for the "reality" factor in their assignments as we connect our studies to the real world. I am constantly searching for creative ways to allow them this freedom and individuality in their assignments because when the classroom work is relevant to student lives, amazing things happen .
My Project
My students have elevated their reading and writing practices to include authentically engaging in the world around them. When we read, we read about world events that affect us all. We focus on social justice issues, global environmental concerns, and current politics. Because argumentation writing is a large part of our core, writing letters addressing issues we have read about has become one of my students' favorite writing assignments. We pour over the problems my students care about. You may be surprised at their sophistication; I know I am. Currently, my students are writing about the Apple/FBI controversy. They have spent time researching the issue, framing a claim, and deciding where a letter or essay would have the most impact. Many of them have chosen to write to presidential candidates, or respected media sources to get their message across. Our problem is that our district cannot fund the postage and envelope costs.
The possibility of actually mailing these letters to real people has generated an electricity in my classroom that is undeniable.
I want my students to see the power of good writing as they craft their words and direct their messages. This experience will change my students' lives as they engage in the world around them and take ownership for their place in the world. I want them to appreciate how powerful authentic communication is how exciting it is to affect positive change.
