My Students

I aim to have my classroom be a place for students to read novels, essays, etc. that are powerful, engaging, and consider topics that are relevant to student life. I teach at a Title I school in Brooklyn, NY.

I'm lucky to work at an all-girls school that is encouraging our young women to be powerful and use their voices to change the world.

I seek to find texts that mirror this for them, especially in our current political climate.

My Project

My 10th grade students this year LOVE to read! Especially books about social justice, students like themselves, and women of color.

As I told them about this book, The Hate U Give, they were on the edge of their seats.

They cannot wait to read a book that revolves around a student like themselves. Additionally, this book is recently published, written by a woman of color, being made into a movie in the near future, and many of them had not heard of it until the first week of the school year. It is relevant to their lives and encourages them to be critical of the world around them and consider ways to use their voice for good.
