Mrs. Rivera from Brooklyn NY is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Powerful and Diverse Books!

Help me give my students diverse books that allow my students to see themselves in books, reflect their lives, and allow them to see and understand other students.

My Students

My students are passionate, inquisitive, and kind! They love coming to school to learn and have developed a great love for reading. I teach in a Title I school in New York. My students are a group of diverse learners who love to see themselves in books. However, many of my students need diverse books that my classroom library is lacking.

Every child needs to have a voice, a sense of belonging, and have space where they feel heard and respected.

My Project

When children see themselves in books, it motivates and engages them because it makes their learning experience more meaningful. It promotes critical thinking and strengthens students' racial and ethnic identities.

My goal is to have students show care towards each other, encourage their socialization among students who are perceived differently from them, and establish respectful relationships among all.

These books will provide a glimpse into characters that are similar in their cultural diversities and backgrounds. These books will also encourage individuality, kindness, acceptance, and being true and happy with who you are.

Having powerful and diverse books will promote a sense of safety and belonging in my classroom.
