Energy: We use it every day in so many ways, but rarely do our students think about where the energy comes from to "power up" the many technologies we use. This project will help build awareness of the importance of energy sources we use as well as ways to preserve them.
I have a very diverse group of learners in my classroom with a number of specific challenges to their learning.
The school in which I teach is a Title 1 school in a rural area. In addition my students are particularly in need of unique learning experiences. 25% of my students have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. 30% receive Special Ed services and about 15% are ESL students. These factors all contribute to a great need to for repetition to retain what has been learned. Repetition however can at times be boring without a variety of ways to perform the practice. About half of of the students in my class at sometime or other have experienced a great deal of difficulty with learning, resulting in failing grades and numerous retentions. As a result this makes many of them reluctant learners, lacking drive to move them forward in their education. Therefore, my students need learning experiences which deeply engage in order to maintain focus and facilitate learning.
My Project
With the electricity games, reading activities and interactive vocabulary my students will learn the essentials about electricity in a fun and engaging way. These items will also allow for the multiple repetitions my students need to learn basic vocabulary without losing their interest. To expand their experiences even further, the use of the digital pen and Mimio board will allow my students to delve deeper into the study of energy through group project research. The digital pen allows recording and saving handwritten notes into a digital format which can be incorporated into research projects. The Mimio board, will provide a unique touch experience as students navigate through text to gather information for research projects. This method of note taking and researching will encourage even the most reluctant of my writers to produce quality products of learning which can easily be displayed and shared for all with the Mimio board.
This project is important to me because more than anything, these particular students need the opportunity to experience the wonder of learning.
For many of them school has been an uphill battle and some have lost the vision for their education. I look forward to using the resources in this project to renew in my students the their natural love for learning. I believe by making their learning interesting, exciting and relevant, my students will begin to flourish and grow.
