Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students need to be engaged through projects and real world experiences. These tools will help the students learn how to engineer and build their varying projects.
These students do not have the financial means to purchase these tools.
They are in a community where over 95% of them are on free and reduced lunch. They really want to learn, be engaged in their learning, and actually applying what they have learned in class instead of just working from a textbook. These tools will make that learning and application of learning possible throughout the entire year.
My Project
Have you ever tried to build something by using old worn out hand saws or power drills that need their batteries replaced after every hole they drill? Well that is the life of the Maryvale Physics Students. The physics students at Maryvale High School do not have access to power tools. Currently we are using hand saws and fifteen year old power drills that the batteries last one hole. The drill bits are just as old and all are worn out and half are missing.
These power tools will allow the students to more effectively make accurate cuts for their projects and drill accurate, straight, holes.
When you are in the engineering field, accuracy matters. Having your axle on your mouse trap car slanting because your hole is slanted creates movement issues in the car. The drill presses will fix this by making sure the holes are straight through the wood. When you are trying to make a curved cut in your wood, doing that by using a worn out hand saw leaves very jagged edges not very clean lines. The scroll saws will make these cuts a breeze!
