Have you ever pulled out your cell phone, laptop, or tablet only to be greeted with a dead battery? Well it happens to calculators as well. My students spend a good portion of the beginning of class just trying to find a calculator that is not discharged.
My students are located in a rural setting where funding for education is often lacking.
They enjoy learning new concepts and technologies, but they do not always have immediate access. Our classroom was blessed to receive 5 nSpire calculators from a previous donor, but their constant use of them has made keeping them charged and easily accessible to students a daily challenge.
My Project
My students will learn about data, seeing the data transform instantly on the their screens. They will learn about functions and learn to apply those functions in a real world setting. My students have this opportunity, but only when they are lucky enough to have everything working and charged at the same time. The biggest impact on my students will be the increase from weekly to daily use of our technology.
With the help of this charging station, my students will be able to use our graphing calculators on a daily basis.
Our current method of keeping the calculators charged is to check the battery at the beginning of class and if any are dead, we postpone the lesson until the next day while we wait on it to charge. Daily integration of technology is both important and required. With this new resource, my students will be able to have daily access as each calculator can be charged quickly and efficiently at the end of each day. With this new resource, my students will get to experience learning high level, rigorous mathematics on a DAILY basis and not just when the battery stars align.
