My Students

Being an occupational therapist, I work with a variety of amazing students. They all enjoy being at school and want to do their best work. They are creative, funny, intelligent, kind and delightful. They can have problems getting their bodies ready to work sometimes, which is frustrating for them. When their bodies are not feeling calm and regulated, they may run around the room singing and dancing and interrupting other students. Or they may be screaming and yelling, hiding under a table with their hands over their ears. Each student's body reacts a little bit differently when it is not in control.

However, ALL of the students I get to work with, will do their best work when their bodies are calm and feeling safe.

My job is to help them figure out how to get their bodies feeling calm and safe in school. Some students have labels such as autism, attachment disorder, trauma, anxiety, mental health challenges.

My Project

These weighted pressure vests give the feel of a deep hug to students. This makes it easier for those who are sensitive to the environment, who have trauma challenges, and who have challenges with self regulation to have calm bodies, and to feel like they can participate in classroom activities.

When bodies are calm, the mind is able to learn.

All of the students who will use these vests struggle with calming their bodies. These vests will be used throughout their learning day at specific times to target increased learning capacity.
