The students at my school are from a rural, farm community. We have a small school at the edge of a large corporation. Our students are coming from all socioeconomic backgrounds. We are lucky to have great families that work hard and are involved in our school events, but we don't get a lot of extra funding from the state. This is due to our school not qualifying as a Title 1 school, which are schools that have a higher level of free and reduced-price lunches than we currently have.
First graders enter my classroom as inquisitive and energetic learners and my goal is to provide a positive learning environment that creates a love of being a life-long learner.
My Project
In my Power Pen Hero Project, my superhero first graders will be highly engaged with building math and reading skills. Students will simply touch an answer on multiple quiz cards with a special pen that will give them instant feedback. The math sets will reinforce various skills such as addition, subtraction, telling time, counting money, understanding place value, and fractions; all of which are important first grade standards. Phonics and reading standards which will be emphasized are short and long vowels, consonants, word families, blends and digraphs, and reading comprehension. Students will be allowed to work independently or with a partner to fortify these much needed skills while having fun with the technology component. Power Pens will be an extra, exciting feature that will boost their firstie knowledge!
