Pow, Zap, Bam: Reading Soars with TOON Comic Books!
My students need a primary set of TOON books to provide an enticing format for my students to accelerate their reading ability while fostering independent love of reading.
My students get up each morning because they're part of a classroom family. As a teacher in a low income/ high poverty (93%) school we strive to meet the needs of each child and make a point to wish our missing students well before beginning our academics. Despite the many hardships they may face, I am aiming to keep an inviting collaborative atmosphere and provide my students with meaningful experiences to fuel their lifelong learning.
My students are a collaborative creative family of problem solvers.
They like having a choice, love reading nonfiction, and thrive on lots of positive attention. Many of them are in a single or generational household and receive free breakfasts, lunches, and healthy snacks at school based on their social economic status. Things out of their control may prevent them from life experiences many of us see as "typical." After I gather them from breakfast, I focus on having them realize their potential and guide them to grow academically and socially while under my care. And, to realize they can certainly control their experiences during the school day. By doing this in a caring and creative way, I am thrilled to inspire our future learners.
My Project
My classroom library would benefit greatly from a set of these high interest comic books from TOON Graphics. The collection has three reading levels to engage children as they progress from the Kindergarten to third grade reading level. Using this text format for storytelling, I hope to promote more diverse reading among my 3rd graders. Currently, many of my students are reading below grade level and struggle with traditional earlier reader chapter books. But Toon books combine original stories, stunning artwork and quality printing to inspire kids to fall in love with reading. Having a set of these books will quickly capture and maintain their attention as they learn to love a new genre of books.
