Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are asking for reading materials, answer boards, and oil pastels. You can make a huge difference in the lives of some really sweet and motivated students who have had a hard start at life. Please show them that a good education is a valuable gift by giving them the supplies to succeed.
My 1st graders are amazing!
I thought that I would be the one teaching them, but even more they have been enriching my life. They are so eager to learn even though most come from hard home lives and are English learners. We are a 96% Hispanic school with 100% participating in the free lunch program. When I think about how hard their families struggle I am taken back at how they come to school ready to learn. They display good citizenship with one another and always treat me and their education with respect. They are inspiring.
My Project
I am focusing on language development with them and I went to a training that showed how providing a lot of age appropriate reading materials can greatly improve an EL student's ability to learn the language. We would utilize the answer boards by answering question and holding them all accountable for learning the material. They could show their answer as a class instead of only a few always answering the question. Right now we answer with our fingers, but I think this would be much more engaging. I am also a believer in the importance of the arts in my curriculum because these students really need a positive outlet. They are motivated by art and it teaches them to love school. If my students succeed in school they are more likely to gain the love of learning. This success will build their self-esteem, because only they can do that for themselves in some cases. I am overwhelmed with student loans and have tried to provide them with all they need, but it seems impossible sometimes.
I went back to college in my 30's after teaching pre-k for 13 years.
I saw the importance of a hands-on learning environment and the need for it in our public schools. I am the 1st to go to college in my family and next year my daughter will go. I want my students to succeed so that they can start a new family tradition like I had the opportunity to do. They deserve better than what their start has been in life. I feel that I need proper supplies to provide them with the best possible education.
