When students arrive in the music room, they can't wait to play the instruments, of course! Their enthusiasm is often unbridled. For many students, regardless of grade, playing loudly is their first inclination. Over the course of their elementary years, it is hoped they will learn the powerful lesson of mindful sound creation.
Since more than fifty percent of our students who receive free or reduced price lunch, we know that many of our students arrive with limited prior experiences in the arts, let alone a good breakfast.
As my students begin handling instruments, many struggle with the necessary motor skills and timing.
They want so badly to make music and have a lot to learn before they will be successful playing instruments.
My Project
Our school is old. Our instruments are old and damaged, plus many are too large for the younger students. We need to teach respect for instruments, like a real musician would have, which is difficult when our instruments appear to have been mistreated. Additionally, it is difficult for a student to safely handle as well as learn correct technique on instruments that are too large for them. This grant will place good-quality, properly-sized instruments into the hands of my students to really encourage musicianship from them on multiple levels.
These floor toms and frame drums will nurture musicality and reinforce using respectful behavior with instruments.
