Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach visual arts at a PreK-5th grade school in Dallas. Our entire student population receives Title I services, including free breakfast and lunch.
Our student population often relies on the generosity and kindness of outside support for basic school resources, materials, equipment and more.
One of the highlights of our visual art class is pottery. We use air dry clay in forming pots, animals, and objects. I have ordered some clay using my district budget but our students will need additional clay so every student can have this experience. I also would like a mold and some silt for the vanguard fine arts program to experience actually pouring a ceramic piece. Our school has a kiln in which to bake our creations and we are waiting patiently for it to get hooked up in our new fine arts area.
Thank you some much for your help. We appreciate donors with all our hearts!
Sincerely, Terry Guerra
My Project
The department of Education in Texas requires elementary art teachers to teach about sculptures. The best way I have found for students to experience sculptures is to use clay to make their own sculptures.
I teach pre-kindergarten-5th grade visual arts.
Sculpting is part of our Texas curriculum. In Pr-kindergarten, I teach sculpting with air dry clay. My lesson shows students how to form a pinch pot using their thumbs. As students mature, the sculpting gets more advanced using tools and forms. We use multiple media so we can broaden their experiences.
This year in the vanguard program(gifted/talented), I am adding the ceramics project. The study of ceramics in history will be embedded into our ceramics projects in visual art. Our visit to the Dallas Museum of Art will be more interesting to them due to their hands-on experience in our school.
