I am a language arts teacher at a low-income, high poverty, Title I-funded, urban school where approximately 80% of our students qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch. I know that my students are faced with ongoing challenges both in and out of the classroom that impact their learning. The majority of our students are Hispanic or African American, representing approximately 70% of our total school population. Our students work hard and are eager to learn and succeed.
Ensuring students receive books at their level is important for students to feel safe, secure, and valued in a classroom that values them as learners, mentally, and physically.
Providing students with the necessary items, and more, to create a positive learning experience is essential. Whether it is a pencil, paper, treat, or binder, giving students the necessary materials for school is ever so important and never too small.
My Project
The students have requested more novels to read from the I Survived Series. We have received novels from the series and the students have asked for more novels to read from the highly engaging series.
As we progress during this ever changing school year, students need items such as fidgets and stress balls to help with relaxation and calming during stressful situations and to ease anxiety and excess energy.
The caramel apple suckers are a popular reward item to use when students reach reading and learning goals. This extra incentive is a great way to say thank you.
