Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Social Studies at a small high school in the Bronx. One hundred percent of our students are recent immigrants to the United States, who hail from countries around the world, including China, Togo, Morocco, Bangladesh, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Senegal, Turkey, the Congo, and Honduras.
My students are keenly aware that as immigrants, they receive a lot from this country. Because of this, they possess a tremendous desire to give back to their community. The Community Service Club, which I advise, allows students the opportunity to affect change in their community, and in their own lives. Community service helps teach them about civic engagement, responsible citizenship, and compassionate contributions. It provides further motivation in school, as well as opportunities to develop, synthesize and transfer their knowledge. They are thus better prepared for college and for life.
Posters are the easiest, most effective method of communication at our school. My students, as you can see in the picture, are extremely creative and gifted at poster-making. Unfortunately, those posters took hours to create because they were made using felt-tipped markers. They had to outline and then fill in each letter, number and shape. The posters turned out beautifully, but they took several hours to complete—and we only meet for an hour a week!
The Chromark poster making kit I have requested would allow my students to create bright, colorful and engaging posters quickly and easily. It will allow my students to focus their time and energy on planning and implementing our service projects, rather than on creating posters.
The Community Service Club’s mission is to serve the community they live in. Your donation will help my students spend more time fulfilling that mission and less time making posters!
