Postcards for Students: Connecting to Digital Library Resources for Reading
Help me give my students a personalized message and an invitation to our library media center ebook and audiobook resources during this time of uncertainty and isolation.
Our school's library media center is much more than a place for students to go to borrow books, conduct research, or complete assignments using the computer labs. It is a place for students to share knowledge with one another, explore new skills, and connect with the world around them. Our library media center fosters academic and personal growth and development on a deeper and more personal level than is commonly seen in most school libraries.
We are a 6-12 visual and performing arts magnet public school in a state that continues to decrease school funding; additionally 36% of our student population is economically disadvantaged.
The library media center plays a vital role in our students' lives both academically and personally. We strive to support and enrich our students with a variety of programs and resources. Unfortunately, there are often not enough financial resources to do everything that we'd like to do for our amazing students.
This is my 18th year teaching and my 5th year at this school. My oldest child attends as a seventh grade student -- I am honored to serve and to be part of this community of teachers and learners as both a teacher-librarian and a parent.
My Project
During this time of uncertainty and isolation, I feel compelled to reach out to all of our students to let them know that we care about them and miss them so very much by sending them personalized postcards.
Not only do I want to ensure that all of our students know that our hearts are with them during this stressful time, but that we also want to continue to connect with them through literature.
The postcards will specifically instruct students on where to access thousands of ebooks and audiobooks in our collection. The power of books to support and transform the lives of our students has never been greater.
Our school has utilized a number of grants and fundraisers to ensure that ALL of our students have access to a device. This postcard campaign will help students stay connected to the library media center both emotionally as well as promote access to the ebook and audiobook resources that have been curated for them to continue to grow as readers and learners.
