Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our high school has 3000+ students from diverse backgrounds with more than 35 languages spoken within our school population. Many students face daily barriers (economic, social, emotional, physical, educational) which impede their attendance, behavior, engagement in learning and their dreams for the future. Many of our students experience chronic absenteeism, attending less than 85% of the school days and have a variety of behavior issues. All of our special education students have a variety of disabilities, which impact their education on a daily basis.
They require individualized education programs designed to meet each student's personal needs as a learner.
Unfortunately, our Special Education students lack digital literacy skills but are entering a digitally focused world. Our students are preparing and planning for their lives after graduation without the technology to do so. My current classroom serves 4 special education teachers and a total of 80 special education students throughout the day. Sometimes there can be 3 lessons going on at the same time.
My Project
My project will provide our Special Education students the opportunity to learn and experience the positive uses of technology now, in order to support them in their future. HP Chromebooks will allow our disengaged students to become re-engaged and active participants in their learning environment and guide their planning for the future. Students will have the ability to practice technology skills essential for their daily learning in high school and their post-secondary planning activities. This will increase their ability to make informed decisions regarding their personal academic goals, re-engage them in learning, and the school environment.
Students will be able to connect to their future and practice needed 21st Century skills such as collaboration, digital literacy, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
Students will be able to access technology daily, allowing them to progress at their own pace, regardless of their individual challenges and re-engage in learning daily. An increase in student engagement will support an increase in school attendance and a decrease in behavior issues. With teacher support, students will benefit from utilizing computer programs, such as Google Classroom, Google Docs, Khan Academy, Snap and Read, Co-Writer, Membean, College Board, Naviance and many more. This project will positively impact our Special Education students and empower them for their future.
