In my 8th grade Language Arts classes, many of my students have decided that they do not like reading. I discovered part of the problem was the students had a hard time comprehending what they were reading. If the students had an opportunity to write down their thoughts while they were reading, the short stories or novels would be easier to understand. The 1-1/2” X 2” post-it notes are perfect for short messages, and the high voltage colors signifies hot news. Each thought for each student is hot news. With 3M Neon Post-it Notes, my students will be able to write predictions, connections, and questions immediately, while they read or listen to me read.
It is necessary for the students to understand the process of reading. We are all constantly thinking as we read. The post-it notes will help my students put those thoughts on paper. After we finish the story, the students are given an opportunity to label the thoughts on the post-it notes: P-Prediction, C-Connection, and Questions: I- Interpretive or F- Factual. Then, the students are put into small groups, and they put the post-it notes into categories matching the labels.
In the small groups, students are able to discuss the importance of their thoughts. Were their predictions correct? Students can share the connections which may include text-to-text (one book to another book); text-to-self (book to life experiences); or text-to-world (book to world issues/television). The factual questions are questions where students can find the answers in the stories, but the interpretive questions are saved for the discussion with the entire class.
For the whole group discussion, we get in a big circle and students are allowed to discuss the interpretive questions. I am the facilitator and students are taught to be respectful to each speaker. In a safe environment, students are made to feel comfortable to share their thoughts and feelings. I am able to keep the discussion going with the students' interpretive questions.
With students divided into four class periods, I know using this process for reading comprehension will be beneficial to the students. I am really excited about this program and I know the students will really enjoy playing with the colorful post-it notes.
