I teach at a Title 1 School in southeast Houston. Most of my students are on free or reduced lunch. Many of them come from single parent homes that are economically challenged and do not have the funds for the basic necessities let alone extra things. The apartments that surround the school, where the majority of my students live, were so devastated by Hurricane Harvey that most of my students' apartments were flooded and they needed to evacuate. Some of my students are now living with extended family, friends, or in a shelter. Their lives changed drastically just within that horrible week of the Hurricane and are still trying to get back on their feet. I want to continue to support them now that we are back in school. I believe school should be the place they feel safe
My Project
The Chromebooks are very user friendly for each of my students - they absolutely love them!! However , I've noticed that post Hurricane Harvey some of my students' reading and math scores have gone down drastically even with the tailored lessons, activities, and the extra practice they've gotten through the use of the devices.
The problem is that we don't have enough of them throughout the school to successfully get students on a consistent and engaging path using various computer programs such as iStation, Starfall, Typing Club, ABCya, Learning.com, etc..
I'd like to add these Chromebooks to my class to enhance my students' literacy and math experience through technology.
