Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income area in Houston, my students face struggles in and out of the classroom. With the recent devastation of Hurricane Harvey, many students lost their homes, uniforms and supplies. Some of my students are still displaced after almost seven months. It is my job to make the classroom a home away from home. Also, many students are 1-3 years as a ESL (English as a Second Language) student. Despite the challenges, all of my students are eager and willing to learn to his or her potential.
Many students move around from parent to parent or family member throughout the school year.
We have students that are considered "homeless" and all are on the free and reduced breakfast/lunch program. Students seek stability and find it in my reading classroom.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting are supplies students need like folders, tape, colored pencils, sharpies. Almost seven months after Hurricane Harvey, many of my student's families are still displaced trying to find permanent housing, find money to buy supplies and uniforms. Other resources that are needed like a hole punch, colored tape, and classroom board decorations are supplies needed in the classroom. The classroom becomes a "home away from home" for many of my students. Students are excited when I update a classroom bulletin board with colorful border or student work. These resources will be a tremendous help to make students eager to work in a colorful and educational classroom!
