Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love technology. They want to learn how to give a presentation using different mediums. Unfortunately, our school does not always have the resources for them to really complete their vision. Not all of my middle schoolers have cell phones. Certain students do not even have Internet access or a computer at home.

Here, in school, is the only place some of them have any access to a computer or camera equipment.

It is a great joy to see them present a video project and be proud of their work.

My Project

My seventh and eighth grade students write scripts in order to produce newscasts, commercials, silent films and public service announcements. They also act out, film and edit their work. We can only use the classroom to shoot these videos. It is hard to get a realistic feel to a project without a proper backdrop.

"The inclusion of media arts expands the reach of arts education, broadens the scope of arts teaching and learning, reflects contemporary practices in the arts and bridges the 'real world' gap of workforce readiness for the young people of Illinois" - According to the Illinois Learning Standards Initiative.

Having a green screen and tablet tripod in the classroom will help the students create realistic scenes for their video projects. For example, if they are creating a new product for their commercial project, a drive-able bed will be able to actually appear as they are on the road or in their room. These kinds of projects are a twist on tradition public speaking lessons. Instead of giving a speech at a podium, a student can create and deliver a newscast. With the addition of the green screen, they can bring their project to a whole new level, creating a station logo and report from anywhere in the world. Many students have a desire to have a career in the media, this project will help them prepare for their future.
