Help me give my students the materials they need to create vibrant, bold and colorful textile designs for pillows based on Romero Britto's art work reflecting optimism in the world.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach art at a public high school that is located on the east side of town, an area that is economically underdeveloped. With an enrollment of over 1600 students in grades 9-12, the school hosts the largest percentage of economically disadvantaged students among our city's high schools; almost 50% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Yet it boasts a 92% graduation rate!
These students are determined, dedicated, and disciplined.
My students, most from racial minorities, are also very creative, communicating their varied backgrounds and experiences in their artwork.
From ninth through twelfth grade and from beginning art students to Honors and IB Art, I teach five classes of 24 or more students each day. My students are energetic and eager to do art and sometimes teach me a thing or two. It is a joy to be their teacher!
My Project
During a class forum recently, a few of my first year art students announced that they would like to have seat pillows to sit on during class, since the chairs were so hard. After a good laugh by everyone, I suggested they make their own pillows complete with graphics drawn and painted by each.
Needless to say, my students immediately became intrigued with the idea and began brainstorming creative possibilities.
With an art history lesson reflecting on Romero Britto's optimism as a pop artist and activist, all they need are the textile materials, fabric, and stuffing to design and create their positive pillows!
