Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach positive, hardworking 6th graders, middle school math, informative and narrative writing, STEM, English Language Arts, Physical Education, Social Studies, and more. These 11 to 13 year olds work hard!
We are a Title I school, which means we are a high needs school, where most students come from low-socio economic households, with many parents working multiple jobs in order to make ends meet.
We collaborate, we innovate, we create, we are critical thinkers, and we communicate! We use academic language in our lessons, and we try our best to incorporate our distinguishing practice of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) into as many lessons as we are able.
My Project
Each week English Learners work on many class and homework assignments. Part of their weekly work includes passing an Accelerated Reader (AR) quiz, with a score of 80% or better, in an effort to increase their English reading level. Each Friday, students who pass their AR quiz with a score of 100%, get a prize from the prize box. The prizes are things students need such as deodorant, pencils, bookmarkers, pencil sharpeners and so forth. Having small prizes for students who earn 100% is a great motivator for youngsters to do their very best at reading. At the end of the week, all students who completed all work, play games with other students.
By purchasing a few wobble seat cushions for our class, we can better accommodate students with differing abilities who need the sensory movement at their desks to stay engaged in their work.
These seat cushions will help students stay on task and focused on 6th grade learning!
