I teach at a Title I school in Missoula, Montana. I share my classroom with 20 amazing students. My fourth graders have a wide range of talents and abilities, and they are all unique in their own ways.
Fourth grade is a big transition year academically, especially in reading.
Our school's priority is to meet students where they are, and help them grow into learners who are respectful, responsible, and present.
In reading, students have either transitioned or are in the process of transitioning from learning to read, to reading to learn. There is a big emphasis on becoming independent readers of chapter books. Many of my students are beginning to get hooked on reading series. Series provide predictable characters and familiar storylines.
My Project
In our classroom, we have a library where my students can pick engaging books that are a good fit for them. Lately, I have noticed that my students are having a difficult time keeping the library organized independently.
The book shelves, book bins, and shelf labels will help them take ownership of the library and be more independent in keeping it organized.
We have a chapter book section as well as a growing picture book section. The bins and bookshelves will help organize the chapter books, and the labels will sit under the picture books to organize them by subject.
The positive praise stamps will be used as an engagement tool in all subject areas, but they will be especially helpful in math. Our math curriculum has large student workbooks that they use to follow along with the lesson. During math lessons, I circulate the room and stamp their page when their work is correct. My fourth graders LOVE the stamps and are very motivated by them. We are hoping to add more to our collection.
