There are no students at our school, only cadets. Children walk into the school and all receive the same title. As cadets, the students all start at the same level and can only go up from there. Every quarter they are evaluated and can move up to a new rank, all the way to a knight. We are very focused on positive incentives to encourage our cadets to grow and achieve great things.
My classroom is filled with 29 bright, caring, wonderful cadets who come to school every day no matter what is going on at home, ready to learn.
All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. School is the only place that they know that they are going to receive food. My cadets walk into school and encounter a consistent schedule and staff, more than what most of them receive at home.
With this project, I hope to bring a new and exciting experience to a struggling environment.
My Project
My project focuses on the social-emotional needs of students. Having the supplies and the ability to send home postcards with the postage will greatly increase the positive communication with my students. There is also research stating that a single postcard to a student can reduce their absenteeism by 2.4 percent. Sending postcards home to my students will hopefully assist in seeing my students every day online.
When students feel supported, they're more likely to engage in learning and have better academic outcomes.
Positive student relationships are fundamental to success. That is why the other half of my project is asking for mindfulness journals and positive relationship books. In addition to having an engaged classroom no matter the setting. The more that I can incorporate into the classroom the more my students will use these skills in their everyday lives.
