Positive Message Buttons: Signifying Care & Concern!
My students need a button making machine and button parts to make buttons to spread their messages of concern, support and hope for positive change for others!
My students are a diverse group of amazing kids who have goals and aspirations just like most children. However, many struggle with the barriers of poverty, language acquisition, special needs and parents working very long hours. Some of our children have emotional needs and are living in homeless shelter motels that have recently opened in our area.
My high-poverty students strive to succeed, but are limited by the lack of resources available in our small public school environment.
We're trying hard to change that dynamic! Many of my students dream of becoming science and technology leaders. We have some serious-minded, talented students I am certain will master challenges that I would have trouble hurdling.
My students are a constant amazement. I endeavor to support their dreams to the best of my abilities. My kids are the hardest working group of individuals I've been given the joy of educating!
My Project
I have been actively involved in an organization entitled, Midnight Run for the homeless. We provide meals, clothing and conversation to street folk in New York City. I’d like to get my students involved as well. The children are not allowed to actually go on runs as they don’t meet the age requirement. However, they can still make a positive impact in the lives of those less fortunate and learn how to help others in their community.
With these materials, students will make buttons to be placed in the lunch bags of Midnight Run clients, in order to spread positivity, caring thoughts and concern for our street folks!
The goal of this endeavor is to teach children through button making how they can be advocates of social change, help their neighbors, and be supportive members of society. The simplest task of designing a button with a message of hope, understanding, and kindness is one of the best methods for teaching empathy skills to children.
