Our high school is located in a poverty area. Many of our kids come from homes where daily survival is a struggle economically, socially, emotionally, and physically. The majority of our students come from low income homes, many of them located in public housing.
As a result of the broken homes and poverty levels of the families of our students, many suffer from low self-esteem and most do not hold high expectations of themselves or of their lives.
These kids need inspiration; these kids need adults who care; these kids need reasons to believe in themselves and create goals and plans for themselves.
My Project
The majority of my students come from low-income, split homes. Many of them do not have examples of healthy lifestyles at home, nor do they engage in healthy lifestyles. These students tend to continue the trend set at home and continue to make self-harming decisions in their teenage years. Scholastic magazines will provide them with positive stories and helpful informational text.
My students need the positive informational articles and stories from Scholastic periodicals that will help them develop a sharpened self-concept, allowing them to make choices that will impact their lives productively and guide them toward making constructive goals.
If students are provided with these resources, I can better guide them toward changes and decisions that may affect them constructively their entire lives. This is my hope. This is my plan.
