Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are outgoing and eager to learn new things every day. They love reading and enjoy special projects that help them reach beyond their goals. My students have strong reading skills and require a challenge to continue growth.
We are a kindergarten to fifth grade, Title I, elementary school with more than four hundred children.
All students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are a proactive school with several before and after-school tutoring and community outreach programs. Our students' families struggle financially, but everyone is dedicated to helping our parents provide for their children.
The educators and support staff are amazing in their dedication and determination to make a difference in the lives of our students.
We have recently partnered with the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center in Orlando to bring new opportunities to our students in which we will produce a Disney Musical at our school. Our goal is to give each student the very best education and the best support possible at all times. We will not fail in our mission, and our students share our determination to succeed!
My Project
While I have very high academic and behavioral expectations of my students, I am well aware that many of them benefit from positive reinforcement and incentives. Our school treasure box and prize store is a hot commodity!
Our school is a PBIS school.
PBIS stands for Positive Behavior and Intervention Support. PBIS is an approach schools can use to improve school safety and promote positive behavior. It also helps schools decide how to respond to a child who misbehaves. At its heart, PBIS calls on schools to teach kids about behavior, just as they would teach about any other subject—like reading or math. PBIS recognizes that kids can only meet behavior expectations if they know what the expectations are. A hallmark of a school using PBIS is that everyone knows what’s appropriate behavior. Throughout the school day—in class, at lunch and on the bus—kids understand what’s expected of them.
My students love to win a prize from the treasure chest!
To an adult, a small trinket may not mean much. However, in the eyes of a child, it is a sign of a job well done. While I try to keep my treasure box well-stocked with items, sometimes it is not financially feasible to do so with so many students. The engaging items from Amazon like little toys, sports equipment, and trinkets are enough to encourage my students to make great choices so that they can choose an item. Twice a year, we place larger ticket items in the school store to really encourage students choices. This occurs before winter break and before spring break - times when students are really excited and need the extra incentive to drive positive choices.
