The city was once a major industrial center, a center for grain based production, a rails center, and major manufacturing. The community is full of hard working, blue collar workers. Due to the high poverty rate, our school supplies both breakfast and lunch to all students. Poverty is also the reason that our students don't get the opportunity to leave this small city making the experiences we bring them in the classroom all the more important. Our students include a range of abilities. We have gifted and talented students as well as students identified with learning disabilities and English Language Learners. Our middle school services grades 6 through 8.
As educators, we strive to provide quality programming in a variety of areas.
Our students excel in the unique art classes provided. They are top qualifying participants in the state music competitions. Creativity and perseverance has resulted in recognition at the world robotics competition and they are top contenders year after year in our athletics programs.
My Project
We are working to start a school wide store where students can cash in their school currency earned by being respectful, responsible, and showing leadership qualities. We need incentives that are appealing to a wide range of students. Items that students will work for, save for, and generally enjoy having.
Student leaders will help run and maintain the student store.
We are working to get students to take more leadership roles at our school. This would include maintaining the student store, helping restock, and take school currency from students as they receive their rewards. When students are able to help make decisions and serve in leadership roles, they see more value in their school thus helping to create a positive school climate.
The harmonicas, board games, emoji pillows, footballs, and notebooks are all rewards that will be given to students that the students will love having. These rewards are items students can take pride in owning and they will strive to earn. The effect of these rewards will last much longer than food or candy rewards.
