Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My sixth grade science students are primarily from low income, diverse households. They come from very little and sometimes struggle with basic needs and easily get discouraged. This project allows me to show my students that I am proud of them and have prizes to help them work towards their goals.
One of the biggest challenges during COVID has been to meet the emotional needs of our students.
Middle schoolers crave feedback and comfort from their teachers and love being rewarded. Prizes, however, are difficult to keep stocked. Middle schoolers have unique needs when it comes to prizes. They want things that are fun but also things that aren't for little kids.
This project will allow me to keep my prize box well stocked so that I can be generous with my classroom behavior incentives. Our school utilizes the Positive Behavior Incentive Rewards System (PBIS) and I want to be able to give them classroom prizes for our 4 Rs: Respect, Responsibility, Reflective, and Ready.
My Project
This year our school has started using Positive Behavior Incentive System (PBIS) for school-wide prizes. As a sixth grade team, we want to be able to offer prizes for students more frequently but stocking non-food items for middle schools is a challenge! The prizes they like can be expensive and difficult to keep stocked.
Returning to in-person school has proven to be a challenge for students, unlike anything they have ever had to overcome.
Students are struggling to deal with mental health issues, process pandemic-related traumas, relearn social cues for in-person schooling, and re-acclimate to a school environment. Every single day we are trying to find ways to motivate our students and having high interest prizes such as Pokemon cards, pens, and sensory toys is a way to do that. This project will allow us to keep a well stocked prize closet so that we can reward their behavior and help motivate them through this school year!
