Positive Behavior Incentives for being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready
Help me give my students Fire tablets, Echo Dot, water bottles, STEM toys and educational games, in order to provide incentives for our PBIS schoolwide program!
As a librarian in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am aiming to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Our library is the center of learning in our diverse population.
Our students visit the library often for a variety of reasons and I want to continue to serve them in all subject areas such as English, math, science, social studies, and robotics.
Our elementary school is a large, urban public school with almost five hundred students. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over seventy percent of our students receiving free lunch. The ethnic breakdown of the school is 39% white, 37% Hispanic, 14% black, and 8% Asian.
My Project
My school's PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System) team has developed a school-wide reward system using Falcon Bucks. When students are observed showing the 3 R's (Respect, Responsible, and Ready) behavior, they are rewarded with a "Falcon buck". Students are challenged to earn twenty-five Falcon Bucks, which are exchanged for one "big buck". The administration opens a student store twice a month. Students bring all of their earned bucks to the store to purchase items. Most of the items are from the dollar store, and students lack motivation to earn these prizes.
The PBIS team would love to provide larger incentives such as Fire tablets, Echo Dots, scooters, board games, STEM toys, fitness trackers, and water bottles, that students can earn.
These items are both educational, and health related. The Fire tablets and Echo Dots, will be a major incentives for all students. Students will be able to use these tablets and Echo Dots to learn math, science, and reading. The water bottles will help students stay hydrated, the fitness trackers will get the students moving more at home, and the scooters will allow students to move around outside and stay fit and healthy.
Having these larger items in the store will greatly encourage students by providing access to things that they otherwise may not have access to. Additionally, having the proposed items in the student store will present all students the opportunity to learn about saving and delayed gratification.
