Help me give my students high quality art supplies to explore during their Portrait of an Artist learning expedition. My students will explore different media while learning about various types of art.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Today, over 400 lottery-chosen students arrive by bus from inner-city Boston neighborhoods, including Roxbury, Hyde Park, Dorchester, and Mattapan. Nearly 70% of these students qualify for free or reduced-priced meals. Fifteen percent are identified as special needs and/or require a 504 plan. Twenty-two percent are English Language Learners. The school's diverse student body reflects the city’s rich cultural and linguistic heritages.
Socioeconomic demographics pose a challenge to these children, yet there are greater challenges facing these student and their families every day.
The social and economic inequities they confront daily place stress on their ability to learn and feel safe. With that in mind, it is my mission to create a classroom environment in which learning is visible, inequities dissipate, and the students have an abundance of materials to aid in the facilitation of learning.
My Project
Through this expedition students are immersed into a world of art, and encouraged to work with a variety of art media/tools. The children are introduced to various artist and experienced different styles of art as well.
These art materials allow students to be exposed to quality materials, to create pieces that have the mark of high craftsmanship.
While exploring artist like Romere Bearden, Frida Khalo, and Henri Matisse students are inspired to create their very own abstract, still life, and portraiture pieces.
To close out the expedition students will welcome families to an art gallery filled with beautiful works of art.
