Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day starts with a quick 5 minute exercise of drawing an idea out or identifying symbolism through drawing. We spend the rest of the class period helping each other out with techniques in drawing to improve our skills.
My students live on a border town with MX.
Most are of Hispanic culture and are bilingual. We have at least 70% at the poverty rate and are underfunded as a result of being in a small town with few students. Class sizes are blissfully small, about 20 students. Most of my students are extremely talented and love to draw. Many deserve to go on to college and study further thus my need for helping with materials to build portfolios and ways to submit those portfolios digitally. Most of these students have never left this area yet desire to see the world. I have yet to submit for any possible field trips as I am more concerned with their portfolio building to help with scholarships based on their talents. We are in an artsy town so support from local artists is there as far as keeping the arts in the school system. My kids are simply awesome and deserve a break!
My Project
The pastels and pencils are to help build their portfolios to show off their creative drawing skills. The use of the camera requested is to submit their art works digitally for review as well as record a portfolio for future use digitally. We have Photoshop 5 in the classroom which is sufficient for this but lack the camera to record. Since AP art requires large drawings this is a better way to record versus using a scanner which limits size.
They will learn drawing techniques using blending of pastels and pencils thus giving them the chance to work in black and white as well as color. Color helps with incorporating symbolism in their works as well as learning color theory along with the use of color. Laying of colors in pastels lends itself very well with this type of work.
My hopes are that this will help improve their drawing skills as well as open up possible scholarship opportunities to 2 or 4 year colleges that these kids could not afford otherwise.
They have enough talent to make it but need the chance to prove their talents and use them to gain the funding they need to move on. There are many local art contests where they can earn monitory prizes that will also help them achieve their goals of being able to pay for a higher education in the arts.
