Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 5th grade teacher in a Title I school in Brooklyn, New York. In our classroom community there are 30 students who will be graduating this year and moving on to middle school.
This year, the city is focusing on fifth grade students. If they do not pass the citywide English Language Arts and Math tests they will be held over and they will not graduate.
As part of our effort to help our students to graduate, the fifth grade teachers have been accumulating some of the children's best work. The work that we have been collecting are essays in writer's workshop, responses to literature in reading workshop, some math word problems, and completed art work and projects. This effort will be ongoing until June.
What we really need are individual binders and sheet protectors to store the childrens' work. This will keep the work organized and protected. As of now I have their work paper clipped in my desk. It is not easily accessible, not at all safe and is not organized.
With these new portfolios, I can label each one with the student's name and the children can be accountable for adding work to their portfolio which will be kept in school.
Currently, many of the students are going on Middle School interviews and if we had portfolios, they could bring them and show the interviewer all of their hard work and be proud of it. As a teacher I know that this can also be impressive. The students will also be allowed to keep this at the end of the year and remember all the hard work they accomplished in the fifth grade.
We would be grateful if you would take our proposal into consideration!
