Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are passionate, talented, funny, and persevering. They have to be in order to survive in one of the worst neighborhoods in the South Bronx. Many come from broken homes, foster care, group homes, and family shelters for the homeless or abused. Despite these circumstances, my kids are eager to come to school and find a path out of their situations with the power of education. I have never met a stronger group of young men and women in my 20+years of teaching.

These students are so disadvantaged that many of them don't have access to the simplest supplies at home.

I want them to be exposed to as much as possible, so they don't fall behind in their future educational endeavors. They could have a very bleak outlook on what life has to offer them, but the amazing thing is, they don't. I strive every day to be a positive role model for them and reinforce the idea they can make a difference in their own lives with the power of education.

My Project

Some of my students are in need of printing some sensitive documents for their parents. I've had several ask me to print some things for them that I really am not totally comfortable with handling and it dawned on me that some of the printers out there are quite small and light. Why not get a portable one for the classroom so that students could take it home and easily use it to print those documents?

Having a printer and ink as well as an adapter plug to send home with students to print sensitive documents is exactly what this teacher ordered.

I handle parents' taxes and welfare statements while helping students fill out their college and financial aid applications, but when they need to print some other things for their records, it's best that they can handle those private things themselves. By providing my students with a printer they can borrow to take home, I can provide them with document security as well as peace of mind. This is putting my money where my mouth is because this semester we're learning about finances and document/password safety. This is the perfect life lesson that will live with my students for years to come!
