We are a seaside community that has been impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Our island town doesn't have a single home that was left undamaged. Many of my students' homes are still uninhabitable, almost a year after the storm.
We thought that restarting school would add a sense of normalcy to the chaos that permeates our students' lives.
In some ways it has.
One of the things I've noticed since we've restarted is that our kids are dealing with more than we ever expected. I want to make my classroom a place to escape.
My Project
My classroom has gone to total flexible seating. It was a huge leap, but the students are loving it. I have NO discipline problems due to the fact that my students are more comfortable and separated. I need surfaces that they can write on and study with anywhere in the classroom. Lap desks are the answer to this problem. Also, those who love the freedom can use a clipboard.
Organization in a classroom is key to productivity and allows the students to know exactly where the materials they need are located.
Baskets and trays of every size and shape allow for labeling and accessibility by everyone.
Once students have created their masterpieces, we need to be able to display them throughout the room. The mounting tape, sticky putty, and ceiling hooks will display work not only in my room, but throughout the school.
Batteries are needed for calculators and other manipulatives that the students use on a daily basis.
