Our school is an academically successful, rural, high school that is filled to the brim with about 900 wonderful students. We serve our military community as well, pulling in students whose parents work at the USMC and Naval facilities at either Camp Lejeune or Cherry Point, the two Coast Guard stations, and/or Bogue Air Field. I teach a cross-section of those students in my World Languages classes, from freshmen to seniors.
In the state's ranking system, our high-performing high school has been ranked as a top ten public high school in NC for ten consecutive years.
Through our state's report card system, we have been given an "A+" designation. We have earned this distinction for the fourth year in a row.
We are on a roll. We are luckily located by coastal waters and it's a perfect background to teach the World Languages for which I am honored to be the facilitator. There's always something to improve on, excite our class, and re-energize our learning.
My Project
Since our school district has embraced one-to-one technology for all of our students, I have included Spanish language Podcasts and Short videos in my curriculum. The first item on my agenda is a short Podcast/ Video activity in which students must use headphones to listen to native Spanish language on a myriad of topics.
Spanish listening comprehension is a very important skill that enables students to communicate in real world environments such as the workplace.
The main benefit of using individual Spanish listening activities rather than whole class listening activities is that students may stop, rewind and proceed at their own pace while navigating the podcast lessons.
The main obstacle that I have experienced to this end is the lack of headphones for the students. Some students can't afford to buy their own and others tend to forget them which halts participation. If my request is funded, I will have a classroom set of headphones that students could use which will ensure that students can participate in this important Spanish language learning effort.
