Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Because of past donations, our club was able to begin building a library. And now, thanks to these donations we are able to expand it. To put great books that our students love and relate to into the hands of many more our POPS club members.
They are urban high school students, students in grades nine through twelve.
In most ways they are diverse--middle class and poor, white, black, Asian and Latino, A-plus students and borderline dropouts and everything in between. They are athletes, mechanics, cheerleaders, gang members, poets, chefs, rappers, engineers, artists, kids new to the school and kids who have long lived in the neighborhood. They all share one big secret, and sharing that secret has forged a community of strangers. Once a week we gather to eat lunch, to talk, to hear speakers, to inspire, to encourage, to write, and to connect:
The secret they share? They each have a loved one in prison. And as they connect and share and learn of others' secrets, the shame they have so long carried drops away.
My Project
These books, these specific titles "Always Running", "Hearts and Hands", "G-Dog and the Homeboys" and "Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion", will make readers out of non-readers. The main activity involving these books is that my students will be able to take home a book that hits them in their hearts and they can take as much time as they need to read it. No rush, no test, no pressure. They just need to enjoy reading books that are set in the same part of town, in the same city where they have grown up.
I have watched other POPS students lose themselves in these titles which we are purchasing with these donations.
These books will not only get them to read but will let them know that others understand their struggles. My students will read these books and realize they are not alone.
