The students in my Head Start classroom add love, kindness, enthusiasm, and joy to my life daily. They are the heart of this program, which serves low-income families. Some of our little ones have limited resources at home, so we are continually challenged to make moments and memories they will have for years to come. It's such a reward to see their faces light up when we're able to provide them with an amazing new experience. It's also thrilling to know that the knowledge base they receive now, in the preschool years, will be built upon as they continue growing and learning.
My students are an energetic, inquisitive group who enjoy hands-on experiences!
They thrive on tackling a challenge and using creativity during all activities. They love to ask questions and investigate to find the answers. Answering one of their questions usually leads to a whole new series of questions! We always strive to provide them with the tools and information need to devise their own investigations. Each time I see the spark of discovery and wonder in a child's eye, I know I am helping create a love of learning!
My Project
Like all great projects, this one started with a child's question, "How does this little piece of corn turn into popcorn?" Because we live in Illinois, which is a major corn producing state for our country, we had a week of corn discovery. We're surrounded by corn fields, so the kids have a unique opportunity to see the process of corn growth. Once they had a chance to see and feel a stalk and an ear of corn, they were very determined to find out how to make it pop. We were surprised to find that most of children how no background information about how popcorn is made, except for "put it in the microwave." They had no idea that there were several different ways to cook it or that different types of popcorn exist. The more we discussed it, the more questions they had about different types, colors, and flavors of popcorn, as well as, what makes those magical little kernels pop!
The children's questions and natural curiosity open the door for us to provide insightful learning activities and experiences that cover several different educational domains.
We are lucky enough to have a caramel corn shop near us, so we can do a site visit. During this visit, we'll need cameras and sketch pads for the children to observe and document the equipment and the popping process in action. We are also requesting a variety of popping supplies and a large popper, so the kids can be active participants in making their own popcorn. Additionally, we are requesting a selection of scales, measuring tools, and resource books. These items will be essential to making our children critical thinkers with this project and many more in the future!
