My Students

I teach at a high-poverty school full of energetic, eager-to-learn students. They come to kindergarten on a variety of levels and from a variety of backgrounds. They all want to be successful. For some, their time at school is their favorite part of their day.

The best part about kindergarten is they can have fun with just about any lesson.

It is my job to see to it that school can be a fun place even while they are learning. We make every day special for everyone by having fun while becoming successful learners.

My Project

Teaching Kindergarten students to read is the most fun and rewarding thing to do.

Each child comes to school wanting to learn to read immediately.

For some it doesn't happen right away. They need different strategies to learn to blend and sound out words. These Pop It Sensory toys allow them to stretch the sounds by pushing down the buttons. This give them a tactile experience that helps them not only hear the sounds but feel them. That, for some, is just what they need to make the skill stick. Not everyone walks in, sits down, and starts reading. Some need a few extra strategies and these Pop It Sensory toys will give them those strategies while they are having fun.
